I have a 1996 Harris-Kayot Ultima 2000 with a Merc 5.7L Alpha One. I've had two incidents of the alarm sounding briefly in the last two days; the first was immediately after coming off plane, the second shortly after start up and traveling at idle speed. Both times the alarm sounded for less than 5 seconds, the oil pressure read about 45 and the temp gauge read about 140. The drive reservoir is also near full.

What's the best way (for a neophyte) to determine what's going on? Does this sound like a real alarm, or maybe a false one? Are there any other potential triggers for this alarm?

Temp switch, oil pressure switch and gear lube tank

I believe you can pull the wire off one at a time and see if stops the alarm

That should tell you which one it is

Re: Help troubleshooting Merc alarm

So far, the alarm has only lasted a matter of seconds. Does this mean I have to wait for a longer alarm?

No i would disconnect ONE and then use the boat and see if you still get the alarm

If you do this with all three you should find the problem and be able to repiar it

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't try it for a few days, but we'll see what happens.

Re: Help troubleshooting Merc alarm

I have seen some threads where the oil alarm sounded due to a slightly overfilled oil contition, causing the oil to froth and momentarily sound the alarm.8)
