Hello,

The motor runs A LOT better. It does not bog down, and I can drive on the trailer somewhat easily. Here is what I did:

I got a new (used) set of carbs and rebuilt and installed them, along with the #2 coil, which was the only one that I hadn't changed. The motor improved drastically. Now the question.

I am not experiencing any bogging, but It does not idle very well in gear, which only really comes into play when trying to load the boat up on the trailer. I set the pickup timing with a timing light, and the carbs are synched almost perfectly (with the motor off, and the throttle at WOT, I can look down and see through all of the pins in each throttle plate shaft). With the engine in neutral, in the water, it idles at around 1150 rpm, but in gear it will not stay running, unless I give it a little throttle.

I switched from a 19" pitch prop, which would only allow 5000 rpm, to a 17" pitch, which brought it up to about 5600 rpm. The 17" I had seemed to be a bit out of balance, because it vibrated detectably at low rpm, so I took the 19" pitch prop to the guy I got it from and traded him for another 17" pitch. This one does not vibrate, but it has had cups added to it. I can only get 4500 rpm out of it. Could this be causing the dying at idle problem?

I went and traded props with the guy, and got another 17" pitch, without cups. This prop does not have a flared hub on it. (the center part that the blades are connected to is not flared out at the back like the others) Does this matter?

Thanks,
cvlngineer

On your throttle synk... wide open check is not the way to do it. Wide open is far less crutial than partially open. Is the motor coughing at idle?

You changed 1 piston? What is the compression on both cylinders?

Ccvlngineer.... Hopefully those carbs have the same throat size as what is called for (no, I don't know what that measurment is). The 70hp slow speed jet should be .030 (#317473). The number 30 would be marked on the jet itself. High speed jet is .060 (#319907). Jet is marked 61D.

On a flushette, idle in neutral for a 20" shaft engine would be 1000 rpm, a 25" shaft engine would be 1200 rpm.

Proper idle sync (carb/timing sync) is performed by getting the cam roller away from the cam, then synchronizing so that the throttle plates are all closed, and will start to open at the same time. Then set the roller so that the throttle butterflys start to open when the roller is dead centered with the scribe mark on the cam.

The full throttle setting is set after the above by simply adjust the throttle cable trunion and the full throttle stop screw.
