Hey fellas I am in the process of going through my first oil change on my 2001 Four Winns Horizon. It has a replacement 5.7 Volvo Penta crate engine in place of the 5.0.

I finally got the special pump that screws on the dipstick and managed to pump out all the oil, however when I pulled the filter I noticed that it was a bit shorter than the one the auto parts store sold me. Looks like the exact same diameter and bore size so I presume it fits but dont want to install it if it is not correct. The other thing is that it is a mercury brand filter, which makes me wonder if these boats need a special oil filter or will a high end one from the auto store work fine ?
I bought some mobil 1 full synthetic 5w 30 to refill with, which is what I read is recommended in place of actual Volvo Oil.
Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it. Trying to take her out tuesday and need to get this sorted out

Check part numbers to be sure. The Merc/Quicksilver ones are shorter now. I use either the Merc or Sierra in my 4.3. Both are shorter than the older style...

There are 2 lengths for the filter, one shorter then the other. No issue with either one, it just doesn't have as much surface area, same filter media. Could go back and swap it out or just go with it this season

I just went through a similar deal. Volvo 5.7 had a short style Merc filter on it. Parts store gave me a taller Volvo filter. I asked them about it and they said if the Merc was used last oil change, might as well replace it with another Merc. So I’m guessing it really doesn’t matter.
