help! VolvoTAMD41-P on a Beneteau 8.8 does not reach max rpm but reaches max speed

hello folks, I have bought a new boat, and I know the engine which is on it has a max rpm of 3800 - when doing fast idle it does go all the way to that but when under load (in gear) the max rpm is around 3000 - the design speed is 22knots and at 3000rpm it does reach that speed no problem - is the engine OK or am I being too worried?

800 rpm is a lot to be off for a diesel. Might be time to check your tachometer.

800 rpm is a lot to be off for a diesel. That is an older motor, is it possible a previous owner re propped to try and save on fuel?

From what you are saying that boat is over propped.
