I havn't posted in a while. I was posting over the summer tring to solve some problems with a rebuilt moter I bought. I need some advice!!

I bought a 1989 mercury 200 over the summer for $4000.
The motor was supposed to be rebuilt. After it was installed the alarm was sounding. I brought the boat back and the mechanic said it was fixed. It still sounded. Finnaly with the advice from the forum I asked him to move the alarm wire to another post on the swithbox. The problem was solved. The very next trip the stator went. The mechanic fixed with a used stator. The boat ran ok from Aug. to Nov. On the way in one november night the alarm sounded and seconds later the motor locked up. The motor started back up and I made it back to the dock. The next day I took a compression test and every cylinder from 50psi to 90psi.

This week I pulled the powerhead and called to bring it down to see what he was going to do. He said he would check it out and help me out. He thinks the oil pump gear went. He made it sound like if the gear went it was my fault and he would sell me a used powerhead for 1500 and 500 to install it. TO me this dosen't sound like he is helping me at all. He gave me a months warrentee and my month was up, but I feel this motor was a lemon to begin with.

I am posting to ask the forum members what they think. Is it my fault? I am going to bring it down to the mechanic and go from there. Sould I take legal action. Warenntee or not 4000 is a lot of money for a motor that blows after 25 hours. Please let me hear your opinion.

Re: help. what to do???

You aint gonna want to hear this but I think this is just "one of those things".It aint your fault if the oil pump gear went but neither is it the mechanics. You will have done a huge amount of damage running with no oil-you should NEVER try and restart an engine that's locked without checking it out fully first-use your auxiliary or trolling motor instead. If you take legal action then you SHOULD be laughed out of court for that. Not really a lot of help after you chucked $4000 at it,but you'll know next time. It's also the reason I prefer premix...
