Hi,

I have a 17ft RIB with a 90Hp TLDI Tohatsu (2006)outboard on it currently
I have a michigan wheel vtx 13.25 x 17 (alu)propeller on it and get around 40Mph at 5200-5300WOT an with 3 people on board .
Now I would like to change to stainless steel to get some better performance. The recommended rpm for my engine is between 5150 and 5850rpm I always use my Boat on the ocean, and now and then pull a water toy. I am looking for a good all round prop that get's me good hole shot and good speed.

I got advice from powertech to look at nsr3 prop 16pitch or the rxb4 15pitch 4blade.

I've been looking around and seems like lot's of people prefer the turbo 1 over powertech.

Now the question is If I get a turbo 1 what pitch should I get to reach 5600-5700Rpm WOT.
I read that a stainless will turn quicker than a alu prop in same pitch is this true ? That would mean that I should get a 17pitch turbo 1.

Any help is apreciated,

Stef

HI, actually it's the opposite of what you have been told or think. A SS prop will actually not turn faster put pull harder (work the engine harder). A SS prop is more efficent there fore will move more water with less slip and this is what you want. It appears that you need to pick up about 500 RPM to get to the top of your engines RPM range. For what you want to do I would suggest a SS 4 blade in the 14 - 15 pitch area leaning towards the 14. As comparred to your 3 blade 17 pitch alluminum the 4 blade SS will be more effecient and even with less pitch you will probably run at the same speed or better with much better handling and hole shot for water sports. If possible the best thing to do if find a prop shop that will let you demo props to ensure you get the correct one. As for brand what works good on one boat may not work so great on the next boat. Setups are always different and key to getting the best performance out of your boat.

Re: Help witch pitch prop...

going from a 17 alluminum to a 17 turbo ss is going to result in a lower wot rpm. if it were mine id put a 4 blade 15pitch turbo ss prop. i would run that thing as close to 5850 as possible to maximize engine life. as for setup ,when putting a high performance ss prop ussualy results in having to move engine up some on transom to achieve maximum wot rpms. i run a 4x17 turbo ultima 4 on this boat and after having a 3x19 and love the turbo better in every aspect including top speed.

Thanks for the input, I had a look around and see that turbo makes 2 4blade props that will work on my engine the FX4 and the quest .

I'll have to decide between these or the RXB4 from powertech.

As for trying out props overhere, the only props they will lend you are alluminum or the apollo serie.
The turbo or powertech props cost like 600-700$ so they don't take the risk of testing and damaging it.

Raised the engine and now running 5400rpm with 3 and 43mph, I will try the RXB4 from powertech and hopefully gain another 300rpm and keep my speed.

If I were you I would contact Ken at PropGods.com online. He will let you exchange props for a very low fee until you get the right one, and he has very good prices and is exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful. As far as I am concerned he is the best person out there to buy expensive props from. That is a much better alternative than spending $ 500 and have the wrong prop and then be unhappy.
