I decided to change the seals, and impeller in my lower unit this weekend. All was going fine except when I tried to pull the seal out of the carrier I damaged the bearing. Was not nice to see needle bearing falling out on my bench. Now the fun part. I could not budge this with a socket and hammer. The fear was I was going to ruin the carrier. I need to change this bearing and need the best way to extract and install.
thanks,

I rebuilt a couple 9.9 and 15 lowers. for those bearings i put the carrier in a padded vice and i used a blind hole bearing puller on a slide hammer. you can borrow one from the auto parts store. Also you might be able to go in from the opposite side with a large punch or steel rod and hammer from inside out working one side to the other.

Thanks for your input. I will check into that. All the needles came out of the bearing. Do you think I need to put them back for strength when I pull the bearing? I am worried it will collapse. Also... I am having trouble getting the seals out do you think I can pull all of it together? The carrier looks like it would bent pretty easy if I am not careful.

Got my bearing out. Used a piece of all thread and the right size washers to push bearing out. Worked pretty slick. Used what I had laying around my junk pile. Found a steel plate and drill a hole in it. Locked it in a vise. Laid the carrier against the plate and put the all thread through all. I think I can do the reverse to install. I heard putting the bearing in the freezer will shrink it a bit and make it easier to install. Any tips on installing would be great. Also putting back together could be tricky because of the detent with the spring and to ball bearings.

your home made tool should work fine in reverse, you can tap it in with a wood dowel or socket of the proper size. i used a press for mine.
