Sorry for the long post. My 1986 Johnson 175 crossflow started giving me grief today. I took it out fishing, and while cruising along the engine suddenly started running very rough and started knocking. I removed the engine cover and it wasn't overheated. The engine refused to restart for quite some time. When it did it was back to running ok. The fuel bulb wasn't sucked flat. No engine alarms. Brought the rpm's back up and at around 4000 the missing/knocking started again. Changed the spin on fuel filter anyway. Pulled the plugs. One was noticeably cleaner than the others, and that same cylinder had a new ignition coil on it. Thought that cylinder was dead but pulling the ignition wire I found it was firing fine. I pulled the brown wire to the primary side of the coil from the powerpack and what a shock! I'm able to pull all the others and plug them back in but this one gives you some jolt-right through the insulation. My neighbor thinks powerpack is bad. The OMC dealer says could be, but also said over 90% of the repairs he did this season were fuel related. I need some help here. Stu

Not sure from your description whether this is fuel or spark related, but: Put a timing light on the plug wires and check the flashes. You are looking for strong, constant flashes from each cylinder. Pay special attention to possible misfire flashes. Take a helper with you. If you can perform this when the engine is missing, you may be able to determine if it is spark related and go from there.

That motor takes a lot of fuel. Does it have a VRO or 2 fuel pumps? Could be a tired VRO or fuel pump. If you are getting fire to all cylinders you can run it at night and look for any spark leakage.

I think it's fixed. I've been using surface gap plugs on the engine, and the engine spends a lot of time at low rpm's. I remember someone posting in the forum about not using the surface gap plugs if you do a lot of trolling, so I put in standard plugs, even though the plugs had less than 10 hrs on them and looked ok. Well, I just took it out in the bay and it topped out at 5400. Thanks guys. Stu
