The bushing with the o-ring seal in it for the shifter shaft in the lower unit needs to be replaced. Is there some easy way to get this bushing out or better yet, how does one pop it out?

No easy way to pull it out John if you don't have the puller and installer. I made a puller out of a 1/4" nut by grinding it down round so it would fit in the bushing hole from the bottom. A piece of all-thread made the puller rod. The installation tool was made from a piece of bar stock turned down on one end to fit the hole in the bushing. This holds the bushing, oring and washer for installation.

The whole process takes maybe 15 minutes including cleaning if you have the right tools. If you have it apart, I would consider taking it to a wrench. Would probably save you time and new words in the vocabulary.
