MY first boat. Fist trip out on the lake and lost spark to one plug. I think I have narrowed it down to the driver or stator coil ( I don't know the correct name)loosing it's output signal (from one side) after 10-15 minitues of usage.

I get a weak spark from only one plug. If I swap the feed wires to each coil, the weak spark goes to the oposit coil (I hope this makes sense).

My question is, what is this part? who has them? Is there some sort of conversion that would eliminate the hard to find part?

I just called my local Johnson dealer who quoted me $22 for the part, but 7-10 days to get it. Any good used boat supply places? It's not the money, it a planned trip in a week. A good outboard junk yard?

Thanks for hearing me out and Thanks in advance for the help and putting up with my newbie questions. You guys are great!

Randy

Ordered a "charge or driver coil" (under flywheel) from the local Johnson dealer assuming this is the problem. Does anybody have this coils specs for testing? Just want to make sure I'm replacing the correct part.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

RAndy,
I had a 74 9.9 with a similar problem. The driver coils of that vintage were known to be problematic. The root of your problem sounds as though the ignition coils are damaged and fail when at operating temperature. My advice, new driver coil and two new ignition coils heck while were here why not points and condensor as well. If memory serves me well I spent $75.00 to rebuilt my ignition circuits.
