I am looking at buying a Sea Ray. I have always had outboards, so and I/O is new to me. The price is right, but I have a concern regarding the outdrive.

It is a 1979 Mercruiser, but it has an Alpha Drive outdrive. When you go from neutral to reverse, it makes a slight grinding noise. The owner says that it has done it for about two years, and it has never been a problem except that it's a bit annoying at times. What could this possibly be and can anyone give an approximate price on how much money it might cost to fix it? Also, is it something to be very worried about.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can give me!

It could be as minor as a shift cable adjustment or as major as lower unit gears costing into the thousands. I think the fact that the boat is for sale and the fact that "the price is right" says it all. Find out the book value of the boat and make sure you have a couple of grand to spare just in case. Be careful! Good Luck!

prbably the shift cable, may need adjustment or replacement. If you pay someone to replace the cable, consider replacing all the rubber boots, exhaut and drive.

A big thank you to everyone for your help!

What is the best way to figure out whether it is the shift cable or not?
