Help with 50HP

Friend has a newly purchased boat with a 1987 50 HP engine. After you start engine up and run at idle speed all of sudden it will surge so fast solds like engine will blow. Boat shop checked said flywheel bad. Pulled flywheel and on bottom of it you have a ring around the shaft bore that looks like part of epoxy (?) or whatever holds it is chipped out. New one is $500. +--any repair options or suggestions?

Chief123 he may be right but those symtoms kinda sound like it running lean like carb stopping up. cdi electronics.com has a troubleshooting site for all ignition parts. sounds like you are describing the stator. that web site will instruct you on how to check, may save you some $.good luck:joyous:

I'd start by watching ebay for a used flywheel. I wouldn't trust one that was repaired with epoxy when it's spinning at 5500 rpm. Then move on to fuel and ignition checks.
