Can't identify this old evinrude. Found a plate on the bracket that says Serial Number: 15016 05330. Looks really old maybe 60's vintage but appears to be in decent shape. Thanks for the help!

Re: Help with an OLD Evinrude.

The first five digits (15016) are actually the model number of the engine and indicates that it is a 1956 15hp Evinrude. Uses a 24/1 fuel/oil mixture.

Re: Help with an OLD Evinrude.

BRP currently recommends 20:1 for that engine.

JohnnyRudes are not "really old" unless they were made before WWII.

Thanks for the heads up on the oil. Trying to make a little list of things to check on it.
-Compression
-F-N-R works?
-Spark

Am I missing anything?
The Overall condition of the motor looks great for being 50+ years old. Definitely a freshwater motor. Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated, don't really know anything about these older motors.

Re: Help with an OLD Evinrude.

I've had 4 of those things.

1) Problems with the tiller handle on all of them. The plastic grip is brittle and crumbles away during use. If you try to steer with the tiller at any angle other than straight out, the casting will crack.

2) Crumbling seals in the carberator were constatly plugging the carberator up. Easy enough to replace. When you put the needles back in the carb, they're seated and then turned out to a 'neutral' setting. I think it's 3 1/2 turns on the low jet and 2 1/2 on the high? I can't remember.

3) Any cracking on the coils and they should be replaced. I never replaced any points though.

4) Great motor, easy to work on. Get a large screwdriver. A big one, like a 3/8 or something.
