Help with engine ID?

Howdy All,
Recently purchased 81 Wellcraft that was repowered in 2005 with a rebuilt Mercruiser 350. I need help identifying the model so I can get the proper service manual for it. The only identifiers I can find are one on the block GM 5.7LG SGI, on on the intake manifold beneath the coil 140996244 GM 11 and another on the intake manifold F152 towards the rear.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,...

The serial #s are usually on a tag riveted to the block, just ahead of the starter...

Thanks for the quick reply. I found the drawing in another thread that indicates where the SN location should be, and I went out to look but cant see any plate rivoted or any thing embossed? I recently had the exhaust manifold off when I changed out the starter. I had a close up clear view of the area where it should be but I didnt notice a serial number, but to be fair I was looking for one either. I suppose I can pull the manifold to check w/o using a mirror. On the work order from when it was repowered there is possibly a serial number? Does F18406DN or 51896952 resemble a serial number?

Update: I just spoke with the previous owner and he said he had 3 different mechanics try and find the serial number on this engine and they said it didnt exist?!? It was confirmed that it was a mid 90's Mercruiser Chevy 350 rebuild, with many after market parts.

Ayuh,... Here's the factory manual that covers up to 82...

You can see if any of yer parts are original atleast...

Removed the exhasut manifold and checked the area near the starter but to no avail, still no serial number. Did a little more digging on the engine and discovered a painted over label on the thermostat cover. Took some paint remover and uncovered sticker and low and behold it says OMC Drive Systems Model # 504APARY and SN# T0959024. I referenced the OMC Model Number Code Guide and it says its a 1987 5.0L. Also noted OMC on the holder for the gas & water seperator. However as mentioned in earlier post the block says GM 5.7L and I was told it was repowered with a rebuilt mid 90's Mercruiser 350. Is it possible that this engine is a mix and match of OMC and Mercruiser parts? Are they one in the same, interchangable? The stern drive does have a Mercruiser Label on it. Now I'm thouroghly confused as this is the first In/Out I have ever owned or messed with, hell Im not sure if Im even using the proper terminology. If anyone can shed some light my way to help me understand I would be highly greatfull.

Looks like someone dropped a 5.0 or 5.7 from an OMC Cobra in there - the thermostat housing and plumbing of the cooling system is all OMC
belts and alt mount also OMC
some homemade connections from risers to y pipe

Any manual will work for you for maintenance and basic procedures. For parts, you'll have to use shop.evinrude.com to look up the OMC stuff, and Mercruiser parts listings for drive, etc

Looks like an 'R' drive to me, age appropriate for an 1981...probably original

that inline fuel filter is not safe for use with an inboard engine - get it out of there and start checking starter, ignition, fuel pump and alt for SAE J1171 tags -want marine safe parts

Thanks for the feedback Howard. I had suspected a mismatch of engine parts and had no clue on the drive. Appreciate the heads up on the filter, already removed electric booster fuel pump and verified starter, alternator and mechanical fuel pump to be marine grade. What about distributor cap and plug wires, how is auto different than marine? Wanted to replace them then set timing. What should timing on GM 5.7L be?

pics aren't too clear, but that looks like a marine ignition.... car hei has the coil in the cap and usually has a vacuum advance - marine has neither

probably safe with 8 deg BTDC for static timing.

one thing good about chevy lot of interchanged parts about everthing on the outside from 283 to 400s interchange even some inside stuff.intakes heads dis waterpumps all about the same. casting #inside valve cover will tell u about the heads. a # behind the left valve cover on top of the block will give you the casting # of the block.the # of your intake f152 f is for july15 .the 2 is the year so could be 62,72,82, so id say 82 looking at it.

82 would have perimeter valve cover bolts... looks newer
