Just joined the forum after purchasing my first boat, an old Monark 14 ft Aluminum jon boat and trailer for about 200 bucks. Wanted a fixer upper to learn about boats with. My knowledge is very limited here so I'm excited to hopefully discover more about what I have and what I can do.

Here's what I know. (I've attached a few pictures)

Aluminum 14 ft jon boat that has had some previous work to address structural damage. There is one very visible patch welded on the bottom. I can't see if there are more due to a compound or sealant that was canvased over a 3' x 4' (roughly) section of the bottom.

Also a few of the ribs were cracked at its center point, welded, cracked again beside the welding point (which I've read is an issue with aluminum). The previous owner I guess in an attempt to stabilize, screwed strips of metal (1"x1" hollow) onto the ribs to prevent a flexing movement. This was discovered after I removed old carpeted decking from the front. There are a few very small patches else where that seem to be holding up fine.

It seems to me that I need to start by removing the layers of old paint as well as this sealant/compound that is covering what I suspect is more welding work. It's pretty brittle and Ive actually been able to break off a few poker chip size pieces of it. (I would really like to learn what this is.)
By doing this I would have a full understanding of everything that needs to be addressed.

A couple of questions I have is how to start this process. I've read chemicals, 4" grinder with a stripping wheel. Where should I start with getting this boat down to aluminum if that's even a worthy first step at all? With there being damage to a couple of the ribs are there ways to reinforce them or am I looking at a lost cause? Either way I'm still going to use boat this as a learning tool and if I manage to get it out on water successfully then great!!!

Again very new to all this and I apologize if I used any terms in correctly. Thanks for reading and I look forward to your advice.

Dude! That boat is pretty trashed!

You have the right idea about stripping the boat down to bare metal. You can use a chemical stripper called Citrus Strip sold in the paint dept of home Depot to get the majority of junk off of the hull inside and out, let it set for 24 hrs. after applying. Then use the cup or wheel brush on the grinder for the rest of it.

I'd like to see some pics on the inside of the boat, I suspect the ribs are cracked because one or more of the bench seats have been removed. You can have the ribs rewelded and then install a bench seat(s) or some other kind of support to prevent future cracking.

I also suspect that the paint and crap compound were applied to stop rivets from leaking (never works). You can stop the rivets and seams from leaking by applying Glu-vit after the boat is cleaned up and/or replace the old rivets fairly easily (best fix) and then apply the glu-vit.

Keep us posted on your progress and ask as many questions as you like, we're here to help.

Re: Help with first Jon boat

I'm redoing a 14ft Lowe with the same problems. it looks like the idiot (aka last owner) used some type of auto body filler (bondo) or something. what I've done it use a old screwdriver to pry up as much as i can without gashing the aluminum what I can't get with that I've been using a 2inch wire brush attachment for my drill, it fits in tight spots and eats that stuff pretty good.

as for the glu-vit the reviews are 50-50 on this site either they swear by it or swear at it haha

i would clean it as much as possible and see how bad the rivets are maybe try and buck them if possible with 2 hammers

Re: Help with first Jon boat

Thanks guys. There are two bench type seats in there that double as storage. It looks like a live well was made or attempted to be made out of the front one. All the damage to the bottom I have to assume he ran up some rocks or something, however I don't know what would have cracked the ribs. But again I'm new to all this.

Also this compound was applied over duct tape in spots. I've read something about a poor mans fix that uses that. You're right about this fellow trashing this boat! lol

But I love a good challenge. I've been prying some of that stuff up with a flat head already. Next I'll try the wire brush. And that chemical on the paint.

What's the best way to check the rivets? I figured fill the boat with water and go from there.

Thanks for responding.

Re: Help with first Jon boat

filling the boat with water dosnt always work because its putting presure on it another way and holking it in. but if the leak is bad enough it will work other than that i would take it to the local boat landing or body of water and check it out. as much crud as he put on there you will probably have a good idea where the leaks are.

a lot of people on this site say not to do it but what ive done to mine so far is spray-on rhino liner (from wallyworld 8bucks) the bottom of mine almost 3 coats over the rivits after i stripped it all the way down. next will be the inside.....

Re: Help with first Jon boat

you might need some patch work done too. so maybe finding a family friend that knows how to weld alum would def be a +PLUS+ :D

Re: Help with first Jon boat

I do have a buddy who welds for a living who said he can do aluminum! I will definitely take advantage of that! that makes sense about filling the boat up. I have a place I can take it to test in the water. thanks

Re: Help with first Jon boat

Most 14' Jon Boats have 3 Bench Seats. I betcha the middle one has been removed and that is what has cause the buckling and damage to the hull. Why doncha post some pics of the inside so we can get a better look.
