Hi All,

Just found a Johnson QD19 1958 that hasent been seen for years. Its my first go at restoring any kind of motor. (this site is awesome).

What I did so far:

Changed the spark plugs, changed the coils (spark is strong and blue). that took care of the no spark issue with one plug. I also changed the gear oil in the lower case.

Current issues I have:
1) when I try to start the motor, I put it into the start position on the lever, and give it a pull, the handle goes to the shift position by itself, is this normal?
2) when I pull the lever to start it, it sounds and feels like something is slipping, so the plastic piece under the mechanism is not fully engaging to turn the flywheel. What do I have to replace?
3)when I pull the cord, it requies quite a bit of force, is this normal?
3) when I pull the lever, it will start for 1-5 seconds then die. if I try again just after that, it will not sound like it wants to start at all until I let it sit for a few minutes.

After reading through the site, I think what I should be doing NEXT is:
1) change the impeller
2) change the pressurized fuel tank to a fuel pump
3) get a carb rebuild kit.

Do these next items on my list sound like they will be the cause of the above problems? If you could give me an idea on the puller issues as well that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ivan

you obviously had the flywheel off the replace the coils . from what you describe, id pull the flywheel again and check to see if the coils are rubbing the flywheel as they need to be mounted flush with the mounting bosses, to far back will result in a week spark, and to far out will result in scuffing the flywheel.

Thanks I'll try that. Do you think that is why it is turning off as well?

Hi,

you were right about the coils. They were ever so slightly overhaning the bosses. once I realigned those, there was no more issue of the conrol lever (start, shift, fast, slow) moving when trying to start the motor.

On the issue of the engine not going after a couple of seconds. I wanted to replace the gas tank and fuel line as the connection was nowhere near tight.

That said, I went to a marina on the weekend, and the guy there sold me a new fuel tank with a bulb on the line. The one thing I didnt understand is that there is no connection to have the air push back into the tank. I told him that as far as I know, there is no fuel pump, so how would this new tank work. He said that the engine has to have a fuel pump. After realizing that the fitting that he sold me did not fit onto the engine connection (nor any other that they had there), I found another marina that simply told me to replace the O rings on the old tank and that should do the trick. I did that, but did not have time to turn the engine over to try it.

Question:

Doesn't the QD19 need a tank with the air line pumping back into the fuel tank to be sure that the tank remains pressurized (unless a fuel pump is added to the engine)?

I have already tried to use the tank and fittings (putting gas into it), is it usual to ask for a refund since what he sold me did not work at all?

Thanks,

Ivan

If the connection on the motor has two lines going to it, one for air and one for fuel, then, yes, you need a pressure tank. Too bad you put gas in the new tank you bought before checking out the connections - I doubt the dealer will take it back if it has had fuel in it.
