Help With Gear Lube Monitor

I need some advice on my Mercruiser gear lube monitor on my 3.0 sterndrive. I was changing the fluid, and I noticed some sludge on the bottom of the monitor (reservoir). I thought I would remove the bottom nut that secures the sensor to the bottom of the reservoir to clean it better. The nut was tight. When I loosened it, it backed off a little bit and now the entire guts of it just spins. I can't get the nut any looser. I am thinking that the bottom threads into the other half of the sense located inside the monitor, NOT threat on the reservoir itself. Does anyone know how to either tighten what I just loosened, or completely remove this sensor assembly from the reservoir? I have the square reservoir, not the round one. Thanks in advance for your help.

You need to buy another bottle, the nut is glued on. To clean put like diesel in and shake and slosh around

I solved my problem, and want to share for anyone else who has this issue. Thanks, Alldodge, but I must have a different monitor than the one you are referring to. After cleaning out the reservoir, I saw there is a nut on the inside. I used a set long offset hose clamp pliers (the only offset tool I had two fit) to hold the inner nut in place, then I tightened to outside nut. This assembly does not seem as if it's serviceable to us, the users. It looks like it is assembled with very specialized tools that can reach inside that reservoir easily. I suppose you could do it if you are willing to get a set of tools that have the reach, but it looks like a pain in the neck.

My '96 isn't serviceable. Glued assembly per A-D. When I do my annual drive lube change I tip the empty, open reservoir bottle upside down into a catch cup. Any residual goo drains.
