I have a 1966 50hp Chrysler. I have to change the head gasket. I was able to remove all of the head bolts except one. That one has corosion between the bolt shank and the head ( the threads will turn in the block but the shank is frozen in the head. What is the best way to free the bolt shank from the head? Thank You

Re: Help with head bolts

If I got this right, you have the head off. Just the bolt is trough the head. and you had to spin the head to get it off?

The bolt may need to be replaced.

Put a nut on the end of the bolt and try to tap it out.

Buzz I can't spin the head because it hits the pistons. The problem is the bolt will not turn in the head. Any other Ideas? Thanks

Re: Help with head bolts

You know the bolt will turn in the block because you are trying to spin the head, correct?
First try heating the head at the bolt.

Second: Set the flywheel so both pistons are halfway down. This should give enough clearance (depending upon where the bolt is) to spin off the head and later drive out the bolt.

Third--and this will destroy the head gasket: Carfully slip a fine blade in between the head and block and cut the bolt. Now, remove the threaded portion which is free turning and with a punch, drive out the remaining bolt from the head. Buy a new grade 8 bolt.

Fourth and last resort: Disassemble the engine and remove the crank so you can push both pistons all the way down at the same time. Now spin off the head and drive or press out the bolt
