i am not for sure where to post this as. if this is the wronge place, then could some one direct med to the write one.

so here goes i have an older aluminum flat bottom jon boat with i believe to be about a 40 horse johnson on back. my girlfriends father gave me the hold package boat motor and trailer. when i got it i knew it would need some work as all the flooring was rotten as just about everything wood in it. when i say rotten i mean to the point where i didnt need any toold other then the shovle to get it all out. suprisingly the piece of wood attached to the transom is still solid. in the middle of the tear down i noticed a hold that had been cut out of the center of the floor about 1 1/2 across where there was a thru hull (which i do still have). there was a very small fiberglass lined wooden box above this hole that i am assuming was used as a live well.

so now i am getting ready to redeck this boat and i am looking for ideas on what to do with that hole?? i whould like to be able to put a live well back in the boat for ovious reasons. but i am kind of at a stump for ideas here. the only thing that i can really come up with is to us a plastic storage tub and put a coresponding hole in it to use as the live well and seal everything both of top bottom as it not to leak then use a piece of pvc out the side of that tub going to either the side of the boat or the transome to alllow the water to drain as it comes back in. the only flaw i see about this idea is when the boat is up to speed the water would drain out of the live well unless it was plugged off. but at lest it would have feresh water all the tim other wise.

some one give me some more ideas please and many thanks

Re: help with john boat

You can re-deck and redesign this boat at you desire. If you want to install a makeshift livewell.....go for it.

The PRIMARY RULE is DO NOT use any pressure treated wood in the process.

Here is a link to many (not all) of the Starcraft restorations which are mostly all aluminum. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=385090

Here it is in a nutshell...... strip out the boat, clean, apply gluvit, add flotation (Hard 2" insulation not pour in), Install decking AND I would also do the transom (even though you say it's solid) since it is the same era as the decking. You start at the bottom and work your way up...... done correctly this boat will last you 20+years!
