I have a 1972 100hp johnson engine in which the electric shift switch went up. Its been impossible to find one since they are so rare, but I was just sold an electric switch said to be from a younger engine. My question is : my original wiring has 5 wires, green, blue, purple, and 2 whites and this other switch only has 3 wires. Is it possible to use this switch and somehow cancel out 2 wires or should I continue on my quest to find the exact same switch? Thanks!

Depends. Are you sure it is a Hydro-Electric switch, and not a look-alike Electramatic switch? If it is a hydro-Electric you can use it but you will lose the start-in-neutral-only feature. Just connect the white wire coming from the harness directly to the key switch "S" terminal. But you know that it will be possible to start it up in gear with the throttle wide open, right?

I don't know what I was thinking when I bought this but it definately is NOT a hydro electric switch, its electramatic. Duh me. Now another question, the "boat doctor" said he has Evinrude hydro electric switches but that they are push button and not manual. Is this true and can I somehow replace my switch with a push button switch? Thanks for your help!

I found one on ebay and like you said ,this ones missing the white wires. I found that they are for the starter solenoid kick off. Mine works fine.
