So I decided to do a link and sync on my 1965 Mercury 350, 35hp outboard. I have the Merc manual and followed it but when I was finished, the motor would not start. I had a real hard time getting the flywheel off with just the puller, ended up dousing it with PB Blaster, heating it, tapping, etc. It finally popped off.

What concerns me is that perhaps I fried something as I was heating it, or ruined something with the PB Blaster. When I pulled the cover off the points, the recess was full of Blaster. I used contact cleaner to get it all cleaned up.

When I was setting the max advance, I used my multi-meter in continuity mode to determine when the points opened. Curiously, with all the wires (3 total) attached to the point terminal, there was continuity across the points even when they were open. Should there have been? When I disconnected the coil wire from the terminal, there was no longer continuity through the open points. This is how I had it when I set the max advance.

So, what could I have done to make my motor not start? Is there a test to check and see if I fried the coils or condensers with heat?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
