I don't have this engine but unfortunately I am pretty sure it under the carbs.
one of linkages on the motor goes to the carbs the other to the shift linkage, follow the shift one to the other side of the engine and there you go.
Yes it is a royal pain in the netheregions but that is where it is, 1/4 drive long extension and a swivel, memory serves it is an 8mm.
Also I highly recomend a manual if you are tearing into an engine, alot of parts in a very specific order, money well spent.
Good luck

I do have the SELOC manual, but unfortunately its very vague about how to disconnect the linkage. it just says its under the carb and to disconnect it. nothing special. thanks for the input, if anyone has done this to this motor please chime in. let me know what needs to be taken off before i start pulling a bunch of crap off that doesnt need to be.

Have someone move the shifter while you are looking under the carbs, you will see it move and then will have a better idea where it is

Having it in Reverse helps, along with the swivel and extension as stated.

remove air silencer it helps its down under carbs .i do it in reverse get a flashlight to help see use a i/4 inch drive i usually tape my swivel to keep it from flexing to much when you put it back i usually take the bolt you remove and put it in socket with some blck silicone and let it dry .it holds the screw in the socket so it doesnt fall out when you put it back

Benny and the other guys has a good tip there with the swivel adapter on a 1/4 drive extension.
Remove the air silencer and go in from the port side of the engine. On my engine that bolt has a slot in it that looks like you could use a flat screw driver but you would never be able to get one on it.

Edit: I think that some of the 1986 V4 crossflows have clips that you pull out before pulling the rod to starboard. Also, some have retaining screws that are removed from the starboard side.

I have a 87 90HP. There's a pin on the shift lever linkage on the starboard side. I Pulled the pin and push the rod to port side and this disengaged the shift rod. I believe I had to remove a nut before pulling the pin.

I hope this helps

I finally got the lower unit off. it was a pin that held it on from the starboard side. no nut on the port side. i pulled the pin and it came right off.
