help with lower unit

i took my lower unit off my mercury 850 with the engine in neutral.it came apart easily i replaced the impeller and went to put the lower unit back in place.it wont go back together.ive tried to put it in forward ive tried spinning the motor over,nothing is working,i assume my problem is splines not lining up.what am i doing wrong?

put the gear shift in reverse on the boat console, turn the gear in front of the drive shaft, just a small stubby thing a slight, maybe 1/3 of a turn counter clockwise, then re-install the lower end, turn the prop to line the drive shaft up. worked for me. triple check everything before taking it to the lake.

i did do this backwards once and when i went to the lake and threw her in reverse to back out of the launch it went forward, thats why i say triple check everything.
