I recently picked up a 1967 9.5hp johnson, model MQ14E. It had no spark, after cleaning the inside of the "flywheel" ? it fired up but ran very rough. It would only stay running when I pumped the fuel line continuously. Also I found a loose spring laying slightly beneath the carb.?. Unfortunately when I replaced the flywheel I failed to get it tight enough and it sheered the shaft key. Where might I also get one of those and what do I ask for? I think Im a little over my head but money dictates that I work on it myself!

Hey Mizz, I would suggest you get on Ebay and get an OEM (NOT Seloc- Clymers) manual, it will cost you a bit but will save alot more than that by getting things done correctly.

Also help troubleshoot, outboards are just enough different from normal motors that you really need a manual, mine has paid for itself many times over.

hey, after you get the manual, look up your model, some of the 9.5's and the years escape me, had 2 little springs in the front, acting as shock absorbers. or look inside the front off your motor and see if you have one spring going from the front of the block to the engine cowling. I'll try to find an image. sounds like ya also need a carb re-build it and a new float. as far as finding a new key, post an ad on the antique outboard motors club site. aomci.org.

any Johnson dealer can get the key, or you can order it directly off the BRP site.

"It would only stay running when I pumped the fuel line continuously."

Sounds like you may need a fuel pump as well.

You will need to dismantle and clean the carb and to be sure also rebuild the fuel pump. The oil in the lower will probably need changing along with the impeller. This is all basic stuff necessary to bring a motor back on line. Replacing the plugs will also help.
