1981 3007 Carver (fly)
twin 350, 255hp with Borg Warner Velvet Drive Trannies

Upon returning to my marina this weekend discovered port side wouldn't shift out of forward... Even in Neutral and reverse, nothing!!
Checked oil level, basically no register on dip stick!!

Not sure, but local mechanic says definitely fried!! Total tranny rebuild required...

So, couple questions...Does it sound about right, his diagnosis??
If so, how on earth do you remove a transmission from below deck on a 3007 Carver flybridge...
A complete motor pull??

Any perspective, advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thnks

just did one. Most likely the oil went out the trans cooler and with no oil it fried the trans. Locked in a gear sounds like the planetary gear got damaged.Need to pull the motor and trans as a unit.Mine was in a 28 Coastal with a hardtop

Re: Help with my Velvet Drive

Well, am wondering...what goes into removing an motor/tranny from the engine room...(all contained inside my salon)
Do they set up a rigger in the boat?? Is there anything i could do to get the process started save me some labor $$??
I always wondered, even after some inspection doesn't seem like a lot to remove, but just not sure of the process...

Re: Help with my Velvet Drive

It all depends on how it is set up in your boat. Is it a V-drive or straight shaft inboard? Does the motor have mounts in the front and rear to support it completely or is the rear supported by the tranny? If it's a straight inboard and the motor is fully supported you may be able to disconnect the prop shaft and slide it out some and pull the tranny only and leave the motor in. That wouldn't be to hard as long as you have room.

Most rear mounts are connected to the trans so to remove the 100+lb trans you need to remove the 6 mounting bolts. 2 are under the trans. All the time supporting the motor .Took 2 people using long bolts for handles in the rear mount holes to carry it.Given the room to support the motor, remove the bolts, knock the trans clear of the bellhousing, lift it cleanly up and away it might pay to remove it as a unit.
