I have a new mercury 15hp 2-stroke. This may be an imbicilic question but the other day I was flushing the motor with garden hose at home after saltwater use and noticed the water coming out of the tell-tale was very very hot, is that normal? In all my years and motors Ive always looked at that water coming out but never touched it. I kept it running for about 5 minutes but it remained same temp. Thanks.

was the garden hose on high enough to provide sufficient volume (not to be confused with pressure) to cool the engine? Remember much of the water is lost when it leaks around the muff. Your intake is under the cavitation plate right? if not it may have had water ciruclating but not enough volume. It should be pretty warm but nowhere near very very hot.

The water out of the telltale on that motor comes past the thermostat, so the water will be over 140 degrees. Enough to feel quite hot, not quite enough to burn you.
