I am in the process of repowering my Carribiana 23 . Currently looking at 75hp Honda 4 Stroke,Yamaha 4 stroke and Evenrude E Tec. Really like the quiet running and smoothness of the 4 strokes but really have no expierience with the etec. Any comments to help me make my decision will be appreciated

I would seriously consider the E-tech, the advantages of two strokes (accleration/low maintenaince) and the efficency of the 4-strokes (fuel consumption/emissions), great combination, not quite as quiet as the 4-stroke however, but much quieter than a traditional two stroke

I personally love the quiet user friendliness of 4 strokes, but friends who have used both swear by the ETEC.

They tell me that the ETEC is nearly as quiet as a 4 stroke and just as efficient and clean.

If I was buying new it would be the Etec. There is nothing
wrong with a four stroke except the many, many moving parts we have feuded about here many times.
The Etec apparently is very reliable especially when you consider its relatively new design and it is actually much cleaner than a 4 stroke.
If your boat is a planing hull a 75 sounds small.

both are very nice, I will place my 175 E-TEC,so far, against any 4 stroke.
time will tell but I have 34 more months of warrenty left.
made the trip from wanchese to kitty hawk in 20 min at 5000 RPM with no breaks in throttle setting.
so far never a puff of smoke . it does shake more at idle than most 4 strokes.

If you delay your purchase 12 months you will find all manufactures will offer Hi tech 2 stroke motors just like Optimax and E-Tec. thats from my crystal ball.o:)

Yamaha and Tohatsu have had DFI for years. Honda can't make a DFI 2-stroke...Too much R & D cost. Suzuki guessed wrong a few years back about the future of outboards and it is very unlikely that they will ever have the desire to invest in DFI technology. Of course you may see a lot of rebranding going on in the next three years as the EPA starts screwing over 4-strokesd:)

You have a win-win-win choice in front of you. I wouldn't say a bad word about any of them. My biggest concern would be dealer support. In your area, where can you find the most/best options for maintenance and repair? Multiple sources breeds better consumer advantages thru competition. If there's only one dealer within driving distance, you might consider a motor that has a broader support base.

The 60 degree E-TECs like yours have very soft tapered motor mounts so you will see more engine movement at idle, but not feel it in the boat. Older carbed and FICHT motors had harder mounts so the motors did not move around much at idle, and the werent as smooth running and they transmitted vibrations to the boat

The tapered style mounts wedge tighter as the thrust of the motor increased which stiffens the mounting and keeps the motor tightly in place.

I have a fifty horse Etec, I got it because it idles down to 600 RPM. I can troll all day on it with no problems. Also the still available 7yr warranty wasn't bad either. At idle it is very quiet. It isn't too loud at wot either. Most people who hear them and don't know better think they are a 4-stroke.

Re: Help with New motor75 horse Honda vs. Yamaha vs. E TEC

Tohatsu starts at 40 hp with DFI and Yamaha starts at 150. Yamaha is at a crossroad as to further development of lower hp DFI pending what the EPA comes up with next year. IF the EPA does pursue further 4-stroke restrictions then Yamaha has to spend the R & D money anyway and will begin phasing in DFI down to their 3 cylinder 2-stroke models. Tohatsu, like BRP, made the decsion seven years ago that DFI was the better choice for future development until at least 2015. With ten to 15 year lead times for product R & D to full line implementation manufacturers can't change their minds once they commit to a new tech base.
