Help with older 30hp tohatsu

I just bought a older 30hp tohatsu. I don't know the year. The side plate reads:
M30A2
346b 54759

It starts like a champ. I replaced the gear oil took it out on the river. Runs great on a plane but sputters at low rpm's.

If I was to take it to a dealer and have them service/look it over, What exactly do they do and what are they looking for? Is this something I can do myself. Is there anything about this particular motor that I should be aware of? Mahalo

They will test run the engine, tell you it runs rough, clean the carb and it will run almost as rough and that will be that. The engine is almost 30 years old and has very limited parts availability. Be careful about putting money into it.
