Help with omc cobra oudrive.

I have a 89 smokercraft with a 5.0 omc and cobra drive. The gears were out of the lower unit when I bought it. I had a guy rebuild it and It was fine the first 2 times on the water. The third time was in the river and stopped for a minute, went to put it into gear and heard outdrive making noise. Shut it down, took home and the gears were out again. Now I need some advice. Don' t want to sell the boat cause my family loves the water. Is there a cheaper route than paying 2500 to 5000 for a new rebuilt outdrive.

Nope,.... Not really....

Unless you do your own Wrench turning,.... Then you could cut the Labor out of that #.....

Look on Ebay for a used lower.
Sounds like you have a shift cable worn out or way out of adjustment thats causing the gears to get smoked.
The Cobra is really picky as far as shift cable adjustments.
You really need an original factory service manual!

Uh, who did the rebuild? Was it one of your buddies or did you take it to a shop? Somebody obviously screwed up for the outdrive to be toast after only 2 times out.
