I just picked up a motor that came with controls and the tilt/trim harness.

I’m not sure I have the right harness though as the pin plugs aren’t the same. Or maybe I have the wrong controls...they look a little older to me

If you could please look at the connection plugs and let me know your thoughts? Motor is a 1989 or 1990 60hp VRO.

Edit, I think I posted this a little too soon. I just found a few female plugs under the hood that seem to work with the harness.

I am wondering about the photo with the three prong male plug though. It plugs into the controls. The wires have been cut off. I am not sure what it went to. There’s a purple wire a gray wire and a black wire. On the harness there is a blue white and red set of wires that have been cut off. I don’t know if you can see it in a photo I can post more pictures if need be

Here’s a photo of the 3 wire plug at controls (cut off) and a photo of the red, white and blue wires on the harness that are also cut. Are these redundant?

Blue white and red may be actually faded green blue and red which would be trim and tilt if that's the case.

purple grey and black plug at remote end goes to guages.

I suck at electrics over the internet. Someone with a better memory than I will be along.

Picking at it again over my lunch hour, I think I found where most things go with exception of this ground. This wire comes out of the same harness that comes from the tilt unit. Two prong male plug. The loose wire with the terminal you see is actually Green. Can I assume this is a ground?

I hooked the battery up and somethings live. The tilt ram automatically starts to rise without the control toggle being pressed. The control toggle is in its return position, Not stuck from what I can see

I cant tell from the pics. Green is tilt down. Blue is tilt up. Red is power. The pics are not clear colorwise and it's too hard to tell if someone has changed something over the years which is very common. Any generally knowledgeable boat mechanic with johnson experience should be able to tell you in person in a couple of minutes. It's just too hard over the net with little pics and such. Plus, if i say something wrong cause I cant really see the whole story you may fry something.

Thanks, I get that.

My mechanic is 1 hour away and booked heavily. I'm hoping to get this sorted on my own partly for convenience and cost but also to learn something. I did find some answers by looking back at the photos I saved from the seller. He had a few photos of the motor prior to removal.:)

I'm tryng to locate a repair manual for this motor. I might try a downlowdable version. The prices are somewhat silly on paper copies

Shop labor is $100 + / hr-----Manuals are still a good investment.----I agree with post # 7 in that wiring on older boats can be like a birds nest or bowl of spaghetti.----Seen more than one control box with 4 or 5 red wires coming out.
