I need to know what my options are as far as parts that I can use to rebuild a motor. Here's the deal, I got ahold of a 1986 johnson VRO 70 HP outboard. The boat was rearended, and it broke the motor off the boat. The mounting bracket was busted, the lower unit fins were busted up pretty bad. Mechanically the outboard is perfect, but I need to get ahold of a lower unit, or even just the lower housing. I also need the mounting bracket and some pieces that bolt on the midsection for the bar that runs down the front.
I would like to know what years and sizes I can look for to get parts. thanks, Mike

Just a little heads up here before you get too far along with this project. Intencely inpect and measure the exhaust housing, drive shaft and anything else you will be reusing from a wreck of this nature. Exhaust housings do bend, sometmes not enough to really be noticable, but enough to cause major problems. Take your time, disassemble everything, motor mounts, etc. Build a solid and safe unit. For me to answer your question on the parts, it would take me a month of sundays to reseach this in order to give you a meaningful definitive responce. If you have a model# of a donor motor or an OMC part# for a certian part I can probably help.

O.K., I got some numbers for you. I got ahold of a free outboard with a bad powerhead. Its complete minus lower unit, and it has power trim and tilt. The model number is J60ELCDS triple cylinder/carbs. My model number is J70TLCD triple cylinder/carbs. I also got a lower unit, but no numbers available. Its off around an early 80's johnson, possibly even as old as a 78'. It lines up and bolts on the donor motor perfectly. The LU is green, and the donor 60HP is white.
I have personally not seen either of the parts. My father got ahold of them from a friend at the local marina by him. He said they would work, but I figured Id better check.
Are the 1986 60HP VRO and 70HP VRO the same size just a different bore? Im hoping this will work since its a freebee. The only difference is that my 70HP only has one tilt ram, and the 60HP has three (Im guessing for trim and tilt). Any info would be great, I want to make sure they will work before I have them shipped to me. Thanks, Mike
