Howdy, first of all let me say that I am a fairly new boat/outboard owner.

I have a 5.5hp Johnson 1960 that I use to troll with and there is a "Lock/Unlock" lever under the tiller which allows me to raise the motor out of the water. I am looking for that exact thing on my new Mercury motor. It is a manual start, 1981 25hp. I looked it all over and I can't seem to find a way to raise the motor, I could easily just be missing something. The only thing I saw was a adjustment lever/rod to change the angle of the motor, surely this isn't it.. any help would be appreciated!

I am not sure of how your merc works. The larger mercs of about that age had a lock lever that unlocked when the motor was put into forward. Is that the question?

I don't think thats it. I'm looking for the way to tilt the motor up when I'm loading and unloading the boat or if I want to fish where the water is shallow. Surely theres a way?

OK, your second picture of the Merc shows the tilt lock. It is the bent, dog ear shaped piece of steel sandwiched between the triple clamp and the transom clamps. I do not know if your motor has anything else suitable for partial tilting.

Okay thanks for all your help I really appreciate it. Sorry I'm such a newbie but I'm learning fast. I'm not home now but I will be later tonight and I'll check it. So if I understand correctly in order to tilt my motor up out of the water I have to reach down and push the lever thats connected to the steel rod (which goes through the holes)? I wonder why its so much harder on this motor than it is on the Johnson?

It should be easier than that. Have you tried to tilt it up in forward gear, with the engine off? Once it is up, that dog-eared piece of metal will lock it up. Rotate it 180 degrees to lock it up.
