First thing you need to do is evaluate what you have. Picture??? How long is the push-pull cable? long enough that it extends across the front of the motor? If it is, it is sized for a tilt-tube system. Sure, you can pull it back a foot and use a transom bracket, but all that extra length has to go somewhere. In other words, extra bends in the cable. That will make it steer like a dump truck. Hopefully, it only extends to the center of the motor. In that case, you are good to go with a transom bracket. To connect it to the motor, use a standard OMC tiller attachment like this one (without the links). Then connect the push-pull cable to that with a Teleflex clevis kit.
Another option you may consider is a T&R kit that puts the tube below the motor, if you have the long cable. Google trmarine
Iboats has some of that stuff. Check it out.
