I sold a bimini top on ebay and am trying to find the least expensive way to ship it. It doesn't break down in any way and is about 7ftx5ftx1ft. Anyone have any experience or knowledge on the subject of shipping bulky items?<br />Thanks for any info,<br /><br />Steve

Ship it by bus, in a tall, thin box. Mine worked great that way. Some folks cut them in half (width wise) for shipping, but I wouldn't do that unless you have to. Mine came by Greyhound and then Texas,NewMexico,Oklahoma bus line and didn't cost much to ship either. Hope this helps.

Ive shipped larger items via Amtrack before. You would need to take it to Downtown Chicago however.

I would suggest to call a common carrier and ship it over the road. Where are you shipping it to? Depending on where it's going I would call someone like American freightways, Southwestern Motor express, Estes Express, Watkins, or maybe even Fedex ground could move it. Your dimensions just restrict it from moving as air freight.

495v has it dead on. Call a LTL Carrier (Less Than Truckload) there are a bunch of them in the yellow pages. You will have to box it up and may have to take it to one of their terminals. I bet that one of them has a terminal near you. It should not cost an arm and a leg. Good Luck

If you work for a company, or are associated with one that does a lot of shipping, see if you could do it though them. Companies often get pretty good discounts through shipping and freight companies. Then you just pay the company and save yourself a few bucks.<br /><br />Thanks ;)

Re: Help with shipping a bimini top?

Thanks for all of the replies. The dimensions are 80" by 67" by 7". The weight is 18# The top is going to Hartsford, NY 10530 from Freeport, IL 61032. I have tried a couple of freight companies all of which were around $200. Seems a little too steep when added to the selling price. I'll try a couple of the other one's that you mentioned though. I work in an office, so we don't ship anything with any size, so that won't work. Again, thanks for all of the info, at least now i have a few more ideas. Steve

I'm sure USPS can handle it for you at a reasonable price. Just a thought.<br /><br />Dymo

Sorry, just checked the USPS site and it says your package is too big. It's not too big by very much though. I would still give it a shot. Go to their site and see what you can come up with.<br /> http://postcalc.usps.gov/ <br /><br />Just trying to help,<br /><br />Dymo

Fedex Ground.... Max total dims is 130"<br />That's lenght + width + Height.<br /><br />Even though it's 18lbs, your still stuck...<br /><br />Depending where from/too.. LTL can sometimes be very cheap. (I do all this shipping in our warehouse)<br /><br />We've been using Con-Way, rather new company, they have contracts with other trucking companies all over the country, and have had excellent results with them.<br /><br />Their # is 1-866-229-2900 Call em up and see what kind of price you can get. If you can take it to one of their docks, and have the guy pick up from one of the docks is helpfull if you in in a rural area.
