Re: Help with size of outboard

That sounds about right. My Grandfather has a similar size boat with a Honda 50. IT REALLY GOES FAST!! And the 4C's are heavier than the 2C's so definitely 50 max.

Re: Help with size of outboard

It was pretty quick with one person one board with the 35 hp. I have a chance to pick up a 73 evinrude 50 hp for a good price but was not sure if that would be to big or not. Or thinking of buying new motor but would like ideas on hp for a 2003 or up motor to put on

Re: Help with size of outboard

Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer and see if they can tell you what it's rated for.

The Coast Guard has a formula which can be used, and as far as I can tell, is generally used by manufacturers - unless the boat is unusual in some way. But for a simple hull, I'd bet it's pretty accurate. The factors involved are length, max. transom width, remote vs. tiller steering, transom height and whether it's a flat bottom.

US Coast Guard HP Capacity Formula

Re: Help with size of outboard

Ok from what i can determine from the 2 e-mails i got back from the company lol.

1st e-mail rated at 50 hp
2nd email rated at 35 hp

SO they where not a lot of help lol.

The transom has been taken apart and all wood replaced eve thought it was in good shape i just figured as i had it apart might as well do it :)

I can get a 50 hp evinrude from a Friend at a good price.

Or thinking about maybe going to a newer but smaller hp just to know it will start up when i want it lol

Re: Help with size of outboard

I have a 1983 fisher marine 16' flat bottom bass boat (aka fancied up jon boat) and it is rated for 75 hp.
EDIT: I just went out to make sure and it is 70 hp max not 75.

Re: Help with size of outboard

keep in mind, that 1973 50hp probaly only makes 40hp at the prop, and its really light weight to boot, as its only 44.9 cubic inches and only weighs about 180 pounds. those 2 cylinder omc twins didnt make a lot of torque, so i, at least, would be willling to put it on the boat and at least give her a try. if it feels too fast or uncontrolable, then dont keep it.

my buddy has a 16 foot bass aluminum boat, a fancy john boat, and it has a 40hp 4 cylinder, but is rated for a 75hp max.

try to find similar new boats and see what they are rated for and what they have on them now..

just a few ideas.

but that 50 should be just fine

ps i have a 1981 merc 40hp 2 cylinder that only weighs 148 pounds.

EMAIL ME phatmanmike@yahoo dot com

Re: Help with size of outboard

Moat of the boats i have seen that are the same size and design are rated from 50 to 70 hp but i have been told that some of the fisher marines where rated at 35 but then i got a second e-mail for the guy saying 50 hp lol.

Not worried about the power as much as the weight being to much on that back of the boat :) i can just see it now taking off doing great then letting off and swamping and going down with the boat lol.

That is my luck as i have managed to sink and unsinkable boat lol :)

Set the engine so that the cavitation plate is even or just above the bottom of the hull.

Re: Help with size of outboard

OK got everything monted and made sure the plates where even with the hull and took her out friday. She handles great and gets on plane faster than anyboat i have had. But she throws and amazing amout of water up around the engine like to small rooster tails from the sides of the motor. Did i say how freaking fast this thing is lol i have played with the trim and the lowest seeting will get it to plane in about 2 to 3 sec and rides nice and level
