Hey all,
I have a 89 Force 125, L-drive in a Capri. Recently The motor has been turning over slower and slower. Now it won't start. It will turn at about 1 rev every 4 seconds with a chugging motion. Battery's fine, cable's fine.
Any ideas, is this what happens when a starter goes bad?

Thanks, Perry

I know you said the battery is fine, but when is the last time you replaced it?

I had the same problem last year and went out and bought a GOOD cranking amp MARINE battery and it fixed the problem.

My other guess would maybe be the Sylenoid.

Ahoy, Perry. Starters don't usually get weak. Mostly they work or don't. You may have a failing battery, but your problem is most likely to be cable connections haveing developed low resistance opens. A few simple tests can isolate your cause.

1. Measure battery voltage while cranking. It should not drop below 9V.

2. Measure the voltage between the battery positive post and the positive lead on the starter while cranking. It should not exceed 1.5V.

3. Measure the voltage between the negative (ground) post of the battery and the negative post on the starter while cranking. It should not exceed 1.5V.

These measurements must be taken from the point specified, not from some other point connected to it.

If the voltage at #1 is too low, your battery needs to be replaced (by a Marine starting battery).

If either #2 or #3 is too high you have a low resistance "open" at a connection in the cabling or in the solenoid (#2 only).

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Help with slow starter speed

Perry, these motors should have 9.5volts at the starter when the motor is cranking....any less an like J.B. says, you got a wiring or battery problem....IF you have 9.5v at starter, and is cranking slow, you need a starter.....but before you go buy one, take out the spark plugs and see if you can turn the flywheel over by hand...with 2 hands on it it should turn easily..if it does not, you better find out why....

Hey, all
Just a follow up. Thanks for all the great reply's. A lot of high quality responses and not one person made fun of me for buying a boat with an L-drive. Anyway, It was the starter. Took it apart and the brushes were dust.
Thanks,
Perry

Perry, i work on Ldrives every week of the summer.....abuse you will not get from me, sympathy perhaps.....**** force engineers hid everything you gotta touch on those motors...
