If the shaft you mention is the prop shaft check the gear oil for water berfore you start ripping it apart. It is common and normal for unburned oil from combustion to be around the lower unit/gearcase. When mixed with water it will look sorta white. Check for Ken Cook or eBay for the manual and by the way get the OMC manual specific for your engine and not the gereric.

Just because the engine is smoking does not mean it needs a rebuild. Make sure you have the proper oil/fuel ratio, you are using fresh fuel, and that the carb is in good shape. An engine running rich because of carb problems will smoke. If it's never been done, you are probably long overdue for a decarb procedure as well to take care of carbon build up. This process is covered in the FAQ's in a number of topics. A compression test would also tell you whether or not a rebuild is in order.

Re: Help with Smokey leakey moter

I just got a 1975 6hp this year and discovered the more you run it the better it starts, runs and the less it smokes. I did a deep creep decarb on my other motor and it smokes a lot less. I ran it down the carb 5 or 6 times until the motor died, waited 20 minutes, and started it up. At the end of the day, I emptied the can into both cylinders, put the plugs back in and let it sit overnight. This method is preferred over the tank method if you are unsure of the cleanliness of your carb. Use synthetic oil.
