Help with stringer 800

I recently purchased a '79 thompson fisherman 2, with the 305 Chevy and an 800 OMC stringer outdrive...got it home, started right up, but there is a clicking noise in the outdrive (sounds like its coming from the lower half), it makes the noise in forward, reverse, and neutral. In addition, when i spin the prop (engine off, of course) in neutral, it makes the noise and there's a very noticeable drag. When the engine is running, the boat shifts into forward and reverse, still making the clicking noise, but the prop spins pretty slowly and can easily be stopped by hand (there's no force behind the spinning). I know these outdrives are universally considered garbage but the boat and engine are in fantastic condition. If it helps, the previous owner (who's husband had passed and was the mechanical one) had told me that he said it needed a new "gear casing"...any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the water pump and pinion shaft in the upper gear case splines are stripped. How does the oil look in the upper & lower gear cases.

I'm going to drain them out tomorrow and take a gander. Will let you know! Also, if it helps, the previous owner gave me an entire cobra outdrive, I'm not sure if anything on that is swappable, but I've got it if its useful.

The cobra outdrive won't help you a bit. Not a thing on it is compatible between the stringer and the cobra except maybe gear oil.
