Help with temp gauge on '73 Evinrude 65HP

These old 65hp Evinrude Triumphs do not have a tell tale (and I don't want to drill into the water jacket) so I want to install a temp gauge. I saw a video on installing the sending unit in a pre-threaded "blind" hole near the head. Does anyone know where I can put the temperature sending unit on this engine? On the starboard side there is a pre-threaded hole toward the top and another one way down low on the engine (see pics). Are any of these the correct spot?

Not so sure your old engine is adaptable to the newer senders that screw into a blind hole in the side of the block/head. Most of us purchase a brass sender which is flat on the contact side. Make a bracket and mount it to one of the head cover bolds. The bracket must hold the flat tip of the sender flush against the head cover face. Oddly, it works well/accurately and does not require any drilling.

I agree, the sender needs to go at the hottest part of the engine. There is no point in monitoring a cool area. A head bolt on the exhaust side would be appropriate.

Agree as well. I like them. Very simple, and effective. You can check the gauge accuracy using an IR tester (or pick a location). The unit protrudes a bit, so want to take that into account for location.

This is a typical marine type outboard sender. Not a lot unlike some automotive types. You can get something like this from any large marine distributor. Likely, here on this website. Should you go to a marine dealer, many of them handle parts from huge marine distributors, such as Land N' Sea. All carry this type sender. Should you get a Teleflex gauge, make sure your sender is Teleflex also. Make a "z" bracket with a pc of metal from Menards or Lowe's clamp it to one of the small 3/8" bolts on the head. Put the flat (bottom end) directly onto the head. make sure the flat part of the head completely contacts the flat end of the sender.
