1986 4.3 OMC. Have a new long block, that I had finished installing most of the parts on---valve covers, intake , carb, etc.
Hoisted the engine up and was going to install new oil pump and then the pan.
Put the pump on and tighten the bolt with ratchet --then rechecked torque in book and set torque wrench to 65 ft lb.s. I made about 2 pulls and on the 3 I felt that dreaded release of bolt..
So I stripped the rear main cap where the oil pump attaches to..
I rechecked the book ---65 FT LBs, checked my torque wrench and it was spot on as some might say.
Get on internet and find what I think is a OMC OME site and the info they have is:
15 FT LBs + 65 °--which I understand and sound more reasonable.

So can anyone confirm correct torque.

BTW-- I had a new SELOC manual, which I threw away--worthless!
I was using a CLYMER manual which I had just bought new .

Tks for any help.

First thing you need to do is get an OEM manual.

The 65 is about right for the rear main cap. That lower tourque is for a connecting rod.

My guess is your torque wrench is wrong.

Ya what Bruce said or when you first put on maybe you where at the right ft-lbs.and over did it?
Here are the specs, from the omc manual mine is a 1986 also so the manual is for a omc and is a omc manual.

and it looks like those specs are for clean dry threads. If you have oil on them or any other fluid (including uncured loctite), you need to reduce torque.
