Have a trailer from 70's under a 1974 Aristocraft nineteen. It is a tilt trailer and I have no information on trailer and will need to face DMV this spring. I think it was painted at one time and can not find label or numbers. Look familiar to anybody? Thanks.

Re: Help with trailer ID

You will need the VIN number of the trailer for the DMV. It is usually stamped on the frame somewhere (in case the label falls off).

Once you find the VIN you may be able to find out the manufacturer, etc.

At 1st glance I thought it was a Gator.

When I repainted my Spartan I was over every inch and did not see any stampings anywhere.

If you just acquired this trailer and you live in a title state, whomever you bought this rig from is obligated to provide the title. Go after them. If they actually had a title at one time and lost it, they can apply for a duplicate and then transfer ownership to you at the same time.

Im with Bond-o. In most continental United States you can just apply for a home made trailer title. The DMV will give you a VIN plate that you have to afix to the tongue of the trailer with rivets, then you pay them a, usually low, fee for a tag and registration. Typically they can do it all in the same day as well. Once you put the VIN plate on the trailer the DMV just has to inspect it, which should just be one of the people behind the counter at the DMV. I just did the same thing with my little jon boat trailer last month here in GA. I have also done this in VA, and FL, and have seen it done in Alabama. Oh and make sure all your lights work and the tires look decent.

+3 on the home made trailer. In MN they didn't even require an inspection, just a trailer weight and a VIN. Since I couldn't find a VIN I invented one. They didn't require any VIN plate. They must run into this a lot as the lady behind the counter helped me through the process with a couple winks and nods.

Re: Help with trailer ID

Thanks all. I live in NY state and our DMV can be a bit picky about paperwork. Their boat/trailer came from Georgia where they apparently do not register or plate boat trailers. And it is a 1974 that had not been in use for a few years. It was a charity auction that I got it from and do have a bill of sale so I guess I will head down to DMV and see what is what. Being NY I am sure they will have some fees for me!

Ayuh,... Ya need a certified empty weight ticket, 'n fill out the Dmv form for a Homemade Trailer....

The gal at the counter will issue you the vin #, 'n tell ya where to stamp it...
Along with the plate, 'n registration, she'll also give ya a 10 day inspection slip, so you can get it inspected, if yer so inclined...

If ya feel guilty 'bout it,... Paint it 1st..... ;) :D

Thanks Bond-o. Certified empty weight? Does that mean the boat has to come off for weighing?

Yes that would mean the boat has to come off. It is emtpy weight. They want just the weight of the trailer. I guess you could weigh, and then subtract the weight of the boat if you knew it and it was just a form you had to fill out. I generally just guess the approx. and put on the form.
