My dad has been having problems with his trim pump. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it decides not to work he taps the motor with a wrench and it starts working again.

What usually causes this? He wants to replace it, but they are hard to find or very expensive. Can the motor be repaired?

Thanks!

I'd be looking at the brushes.

Strip it down, clean everything and then only replace/repair what needs doing.... Any half reasonable auto sparky should be able to help you. You may need to go to Merc for the brushes. Again the auto sparky should be able to advise.
