Help with trim sending unit adjustment

2004 SX-M. After replacing the bellows today I went for a lake test and my trim gauge is not working correctly. Once the drive is fully trimmed down, the needle on the gauge shoots past "up". Other than that, the gauge seems to be working.

I've read the sticky no less than a dozen times and the PDF by Don. What I can't figure out, under #3 in the adjustment procedures, where do I hook up the ohm meter since the sending unit control nut is already pushed in to the pivot bolt? Do I connect to the wires somewhere else? Maybe I'm making this more complicated than it needs to be.

It's sticky #12 after you click on "volvo penta information"

Sounds like you didn't install it in the correct position. I would remove it from the drive (wiring still connected) and rotate it until the gauge reads full down. Then trim the drive all the way down and install it in that position. Confirm it reads full down with the drive full down once installed and you should be good to go.

So is there a way to adjust it without hooking up an ohm meter and pulling the sending unit completely out? Just loosen the two bolts and rotate is slowly?

The trim sensor can only be rotated maybe 30 degrees or so. If you need more than that you will need to remove the two small bolts, pull the sensor, and rotate the whole sensor housing one notch and re-install. Then you can rotate it within that 30 degree or so range. I would recommend following Horigan's post, and maybe have a helper if you cannot see the trim gage from behind the boat.
