I am trying to check power pack output on my evinrude 1985 90hp. The manual says to use a peak reading voltmeter inconjunction with a stevens adapter. I have the adapter and know that it works. My voltmeter is a Fluke 179 true rms multimeter. It has a choice of maximum, minimum and average readings. Isn't the maximum the same thing as peak? I set it on maximum reading in DC volts in the 600 range scale. I hooked one red lead with the stevens adapter on the primary wire (I tried all primary wires). One red wire on the voltmeter goes to the other red wire on the adapter. Then I hooked the black ground of the adapter to a good ground on the engine. The black ground of the voltmeter was also connected at same location. I could not get any readings with the voltmeter. The voltmeter works fine with anything else. I am really stumped and need some help. Thank you.

rh,See if you can get a reading in the AC range and multiply the result by 1.414.Still red lead to coil primary and black lead to good ground.May be best to use piercing probes(if you have them) with everything connected as normal.
