Help with water pump on OMC 800 Stringer

I have a 1980 Beachcraft that I am trying to change the water pump on. The model is #982436, I can't find any online info. I can't find where the water pump is located or if parts are available. Engine and outdrive is OMC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard. That's not your model number: that's the part number to the upper gear case housing. Somewhere on the engine (usually starboard side, toward the rear - mine was on the motor mount) is a tag with your model number. It'll read something more like 990252C 1980.

The water pump is in the bottom of the upper gear case, and the kit is still available. You'll THIS one might do, but you'll want to confirm against your actual drive.

The factory manual is best because you don't want to damage your shift cable if you remove the whole outdrive. There must be 50 old threads on stringer 400 , 800 series impeller changes here on iboats. While you're in there, slathering some decent waterproof grease on the splines of the w/p shaftwill be prudent

Scratching my head..Testing the water pump in a big tub and it doesn't seem to work with the lower unit all the way down but when I slightly raise the unit the water flows fine. Could something be plugged??

trying to run an outdrive in a bucket will do nothing but burn the impeller.

impellers need to be flooded prior to startup. which means the whole outdrive will need to be under water. that means the bucket needs to be big enough to float the boat in it.

either A - run it on muffs, or B run it in the water.

use the videos on the TC electronics page to service your drive. these guys are one of the few servicing folks for ancient stringer drives

as mentioned, dont damage the shift cable. its $750 for a new one

when you have your drive apart for the water pump replacement because you toasted your impeller trying to suck from a bucket, make sure to inspect the splines on your 3-piece vertical driveshaft. they fail. if the driveshaft splines are pointy and sharp, you need to fully rebuild the drive and replace the shafts. you may get lucky and the prior owner replaced them already (the splines would be square and fit tight)

Thanks for your quick reply. I did flood the impeller before starting and used my big horse trough. Not ideal I know but just wanted to see if the water pump works. Hopefully I didn't damage anything. I really appreciate the help. Off to watch the TC Electronic videos. Thanks for that link!
