I just bought a 1986 thundercraft with a 86 Johnson 90hp v4 outboard.
When we first took it out it would not idle, and everyone i spoke to said it was the gas (ethenol) It ran great at full throttal but when I brought it back to an Idle, after about 30sec it would die and would be hard to restart.
So I changed to premium shell gas and added the 2+4 additive. I also changed the fuel filter, added a filter for seperating the water from the ethenol, I also changed out the plugs. All this did not seam to do much so I turned up the idle. THIS seemed to help alot I used it several times and it did not stall. Now there is a verry little bump felt when you put it in gear. Is this Normal? So all this leads me to the present problem..
i took it out on the lake today it started no problem Idled for 5 to 10 min and left the dock. It seemed to be runnning rough going up through the channel getting out to open water. I went to Accelerate and it stalled and i could not restart it. It seemed to be the battery because it felt weak when turning over. i checked the terminals to make sure there was a good connection and when i touched the pos terminal it was verry hot! I would wiggle the wires down there and sometimes when i went to turn it over it would feel stronger.
One time i would turn the key nothing would happen not even the beep for choke, the next time a few min later it would turn over fine with hesitation but would seem weaker than it should.

Finally we got it to shore and borrowed a battery pack and it started right up so i went to bring the boat back to the truck and as i was going across the channel the thing stalled again, I hooked up the batt. pack again and it didnt help at all. I had to be towed to shore. did not restart

Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Help!!!

The heat tells you that you have high resistance at that point. Battery cables often corrode inside of their sheathing where it cannot be seen, but will definitely cause your symptoms. You can try cutting them back, but the safest bet is to replace the battery cables.

You need to find the reason if the motor won't idle at around 650-750. Having the idle set high will eventually ruin your gearcase. I would recommend a compression test as a first order of business.

US Octane of over 89 is unnecessary - use the extra money on a can of Seafoam instead.
