I have a 1967 evinrude 80HP outboard. The prop is really chewed up and I am looking at getting a new(er) one. I have no idea how to tell what size I need or how to replace it.

Re: Help!!

You figure out what you have by actually looking at the prop. Somewhere on the prop, either stamped on the hub between the blades, or on the hub itself behind the prop nut you'll find some numbers. The numbers will represent one of two things:

1) Number such as 12-3/4x15 indicate the prop is 12-3/4 inches in diameter and it has 15 inches of pitch. You go to the iBoats propeller section in the Marine Store (button at the top left of the screen) and you will be presented with a form in which you specify the Make, year and HP of your engine. A list of props appears. You pick a 12-3/4 x 15 and send your money.

2) The numbers may be something like this: 307446 which is a manufacturers part number (those were just arbitrary numbers and may not be for a prop). You can simply Google 307446 and any number of links will pop up telling what that part number references. Once you know what the diamter and pitch are you go back to iBoats and order your prop.

There is no such thing as a standard prop so you need to start prop selection by determining what you have now. To replace the prop you remove the retaining hardware and pull it off. Some props require a different thrust washer, some don't.
