I have a 1980 evinrude 2 cycle motor. It starts fine but when i give it power, it bogs down. I make sure that the valave on the gas tank is open but i did notice that the primer builb on the gas line, is flat and will not let me prime the line. What problem could this be.

Re: Help

Check the linkage to ensure that the spark timing is moving to the proper synchronization point before the carbs start opening. Sometimes linkages can get a bit sticky.

Re: Help

You need the factory Service Manual, BH. Anyone who tries to work on an outboard without one has a fool for a technician. Do the linkage and synchronization adjustments. Manual at www.outboardbooks.com

It is also a good idea to read the title of the forum you post in. This forum is Boat Topics and Questions (not engine topics).

I will move this to the Johnson and Evinrude outboard troubles forum for you.

Good luck. :)

Re: Help

Thanks, ive done that and its opened all the way. Because the primer pump is flat and wont let me prime the line because it is flat. Could it be anything else.

Re: Help

Okay, so lets go a little deeper. Since your vent is open is it clear? Such as something clogging it? Also does your tank have a checkball on the hose conection that may not be opening all the way? Just some more ideas to look at.

Re: Help

Sounds like a plugged tank pickup, or faulty check valve in primer bulb. You'll know for sure if you borrow a functioning tank/hose and test.

Re: Help

Be sure the connectors on the fuel line are connected right. My brother inlaw had his backwards.
If they are right then either the vent is plugged or the pickup in the tank is plugged or some other restriction in the system. If the vent is plugged the bulb should inflate when you open the filler cap.
