Re: help!!!!!

Does it start without gas dumped in carb when its warm ? [the engine, not the weather !] Check choke operation, if you need extra gas when its cold, its probably not chokin'.............Check fuses on the electrics.............

Re: help!!!!!

Do you "pump" the throttle a time or two when cold? That sets the choke and primes the engine with gas. IF, the accelerator pump in the carb is working.

I assume your engine is a Mercruiser 888, is that correct?

The choke is on the carb, a butterfly that closes and restricts air going into the engine, that way it gets more gas for cold starts. It may just be your starting procedure,. If your choke is working. It needs to be [set] before starting. Push the throttle ALL the way forward [ before turning the key] That should close the butterfly, choking the engine. Then maybe pump it with the throttle a time or two . every boat is different, but thats a good start to try. You can observe if the choke is working. Take off the flame arrestor, Push the throttle to WOT position and see if the butterfly closes. If thats not it, tell us , we will go from there... Good luck !

Re: help!!!!!

Im assuming its an 888 thats all that i can find on the net for a 302 it says 188hp on top the motor and no i havent tried pushing the throttle all the way forward ive always had new boats that had outboard this is my irst inboard the motor seems to be in really great shape it doesnt ha e any wierd noises and the guy i got it from said he took good care of it also does it have a fuel pump? I know absolutely nothing about an inboard motor btw and will it hurt the outdrive if you drive it with no tilt/trim? And like i sd after i put gas in the carb it will run fine and start up everytime i just dnt know anything about them

Re: help!!!!!

Well........................Like I said [we actually] Try to set the choke as described. It wont hurt the drive as long as the drive is down all the way, to up, trimmed, just a LITTLE. Trailering with the drive down however might not be a great idea. And now you know something about 'em............:D

Re: help!!!!!

Ok when you say push the throttle all the way down, do i puh in the button on he handle so it doesnt engage in gear or just push it all the way down without pushing in the button? And thanks for your help guys i appreciate it i traded a thompson center encore for the boat so i guess it wasnt a bad trade and oh yea can anybody tell me what the boat is worth after being restored?

Re: help!!!!!

Yeah, don't engage the drive. Leave it in neutral. Just like a car, ya wanna get it started and warmed up a minute or two before putting it into gear. Pushing the throttle all the way forward should automatically set the choke [close the butterfly. Then as the engine warms up, the choke butterfly should automatically start to open. Maybe take 5-10 minutes to open all the way [guessn'] There are alot of variables involved into deciding a value .. Need pics, hrs , condition, options, work done, location. Used in fresh or salt water etc. Trailer etc.. A 20 yr old boat here in Minnesota used only 4-5 months a year in fresh water can be in way better condition , and maybe worth more , then a 5 year old boat from Florida that is slipped and used yr round in salt water... R U picking up what I am putting down, dude ?

Re: help!!!!!

Absolutely buddy ill post some pics when i get it done im not going back original though im leaving the captains chair and putting in a front/rear facing seat on the passengers side and on the drivers side im installing a bench seat ive already removed the factory cooler in the floor and installed a bait tank im a big fisherman and im repainting the boat white and im leaving the carpet out and painting the floor white also the boat is a fresh water boat but i have no clue of he hours on it but the hull and all the wood is in good shape so how hard is it to put in he new tacg and temp gauge and is it a law to have a blower and whats its purpose? And are the trim pumps rebuildable i think that mine is shot it leaks real bad

Re: help!!!!!

dude.... ok Trim m pumps im not experianced in... cant comment. Blower GOTTA HAVE... and ya GOTTA USE IT !! it removes any explosive vapors from the engine compartment BEFORE you turn the key. If ya have a fuel leak or something and the engine compartment fills with vapor and you go to start and a spark from the starter, plugwires, carb backfire or what have you, ignites those fumes. You are in a world of hurt as you wil git ALL BLOWED UP.!!!!! Its hard to say how hard that stuff is to put in Its all relative Might be easy for one person, hard for another... Doable tho......

Re: help!!!!!

Ok guys a real quick question when i pulled up my deck and inspected my stringes they were mostly rotten so i tore them out also and i left the foam it was wet but it was hot and dry outside so i left the boat uncovered and let the foam dry then i replaced the stringers with 1x10s instead of plywood like everybody else is doing, is that a good idea? I figured a solid board was stronger that plywood. Then i glued them in and then i sprayed the wood with timbor its a chemical that controls rott and mold so i thought it couldnt hurt to spray it then i fiberglassed them in. Im.jus lookin for somebodies input on wether or not that was a good decision

Re: help!!!!!

Sorry i dont have no pics of that process lol but when i ripped up the floor and the stringers out it wasnt that wet, and the stringers wasnt totally rotten they were just wet they still had plenty of strength the guy i got it from kept it in a barn pretty much its whole life until last year but he kept it covered up and a few days in the sun dried up my foam, it cant stay wet forever, so idk we'll find out in a couple years right?
