I have a 1990 200 johnson VRO new to me. I test ran it with the guy when I bought it Very quick run due to weather ran fine other than rough idle. Took it out two weeks ago when I got it home still idle was rough was slow to get on a plane and would surge at WOT. Took it home cleaned carbs (not dirty and all needls and float levels look fine) and replaced fuel line. Took back out and did the same thing again, and started sneezing at idle. Brought back home and checked spark, good blue spark on all cylinders. Dont have a tool to check spark length. Noticed fuel line was a little big as it was sucking a little air around the t fittings so I got smaller line and rebuilt the vro fuel pump (oil is disconnected) Checked pulse line, strong pulse when motor is cranked. Also cranked engine and fuel pump has good output. Sneeze quit with the smaller fuel llines no air. replaced primer ball and took out the inline glass fuel filter. Even ran on a small 6 gallon fuel tank to eleviate in deck fuel tank problems. Still surges at WOT. She runs smooth at 1/2 even 3/4 throttle but when you punch it to WOT it surges until the throttle is back down a little. What the hell is going on? thinking about adjusting the carb float just a hair to allow a little more fuel in. Just worried this may make it get to much fuel at idle.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just took the air cover off and noticed fuel in there. So I pumped the primer ball hard then tilted the motor up. About half way up 3 or 4 of the 6 carbs started dumping gas out. Could this be my problem?????????????

If it isn't your problem, it needs to be repaired.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

have you checked fuel filter @ inlet port just before carb's?

Yes i plan on a rebuild tomorrow. My question is why does the motor fire right up and idle pretty good with these needles not seating correct?

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well you listed a couple of problems. And I think you said youfixed a couple of them. Here is a list as I see them

1) Idling rough. - Carb bodies and fuel passages need to be cleaned out. Along with the orfices in the jets and in the trottle body plate. The ones in the throttle body plate are where the gas comes out at idles. Seeing your throttle flap is in the closed position. Then you need to confirm your link and synic. The link and sinc is to ensure that all your throttle plates in you throttle body (intake manifold right behind you carbs) are perfectly closed. If they are even a little bit open or not seated than it will run like hell. Also if the holes in the throttle plate are even a little pluged then it will run lean on that cylinder and eventually burn out the cylinder. Need to make sure these two things are perfect. Also you say you remove the inline fule filter. Any crap that gets to the carbs will block/plug these orfices and lean a cylinder out. You'll want to put that filter back on. If you still have it you will want to soak it in gas over night and blow it off with low pressure air.

2) Fuel leaking out of carbs when squeezing the primmer bulb. -Your float needles are not seating propperly. This could be from either gumming up or damage. You will want to pick up a couple of carb kits and rebuild them. You get new seats and needle in the kits. If you don't then your fuel pump will keep pumping gas into the lower carbs when running and flood those cylinders. It may also starve your top two cylinders depending on how much it leaks on the bottom. Fuel travels the path of least resistance. You'll want to do this soon. Also make sure your float heights are correct. Basicall even/parallel with the carb bowl face.

3) Surging at WOT -This could be because of three different things. Either an air leak or a plugged get or the fuel flooding a cylinder. I would go through and double check all your fuel lines. Especially the recirc system, fuel manifold system, and the primer system hoses. The motor is getting old and so are the hoses. It does not take much to lean out a cylinder and cause a melt down. Also when you rebuild the carb make sure the jet in the bottom of the carb is super clean. Also the passage traveling straight up from that one. That is the WOT fuel passage. We already talked about the fuel flooding.

4) Carb Float height - Do not play with this adjustment. That stops the flooding and allows the fuel pump to fill the top two carb of gas. If it is open all the time or the carb is over full of fuel then the cylinder will flood and the motor will run like hell.

Hope this helps. Keep posting and we will help out anyway we can.
